This year we’ve partnered with YoungMinds, the UK’s leading charity fighting for children and young people’s mental health, to create a very special category to look back on the last year and a half through audio.

YoungMinds, is the UK’s leading charity fighting for children and young people’s mental health. In the UK today, an estimated five children in every classroom has a mental health problem.

YoungMinds provides young people with tools to look after their mental health. Empowering adults to be the best support they can be to the young people in their lives. And they give young people the space and confidence to get their voices heard and change the world we live in. We want to see a world where no young person feels alone with their mental health, and all young people get the mental health support they need, when they need it, no matter what.

My Year in audio with YoungMinds

We want young people to create either a podcast, radio show, interview, poem or any other form of audio as a platform for expression – entrants can grab a phone, tablet or microphone and record their Young Audio Awards entry.

The world changed in March 2020 and life has not been the same since. The last two years has been a rollercoaster, with highs, lows and lots of change. It is healthy to express your thoughts and feelings, which is why the Young Audio Awards has teamed up with mental health charity Young Minds to call on 8 to 18 year olds across the UK, to use audio to express themselves. The audio you record can be about anything related to the last two years and life in the pandemic. It may be about the things that helped you cope in challenging times, advice you might have for other young people or what you learnt during this challenging period. It could be that your channelling your thoughts in a podcast or radio show, it may be that you record an interview with a family member, friend or teacher or perhaps if you love poetry you could record your own prose. Audio can be used in any form, we’re just looking for creativity, honesty and expression.

We’re not looking for highly polished, professional sounding audio – we just want brilliant creativity. You can record your audio with a phone, tablet, over Zoom or of course with a microphone. You may wish to edit your audio with free software such as Audacity, but this is not essential as long as your entry is under 10 minutes long.
